Medlicott Street, Newport
NOW , even though, there was no Census completed in our household for the reasons outlined last week that is not to say that Observer has not given any thought to the matter. In fact, the Census, as representing the facts of life in Ireland, has been very much under consideration. And to put it bluntly, the Census is a very crude method of detailing the facts and figures. Oh! sure enough, it gets the essential details or most of them but it does not plant a real picture, tell the real story.
Consider this. Where I grew up on Meddlicott Street, there were twenty-one premises. In their day they would have been regarded as houses and shops. Today, most people would turn their noses up at them and wonder how such small homes could have given shelter and comfort to so many.
I'm talking about the early and late 1950s and maybe even stretching into the early 'sixties... the time when Ireland, along with the rest of the world, began to swing. (At the time I can't say that my home place was very much in the groove or that the era of big spending made any significant impression).
Nevertheless, while they were hard times they were generally good times. As youngsters, certainly we were not aware of any great hardships, though it is likely our parents were hard-stretched to provide for all of us. And there were a lot of us ... which is the point I am coming to.
Two doors up from us was Granny Gallagher. She was not our granny, of course, but she was "granny" to the entire street. She was Mrs. Nealis's mother and she lived, good humouredly and comfortably, by the standards of the time, to a ripe old age. She was, it is fair to say, well looked after by her "real" family, a factor which contributed significantly to her long life and happy state. My memory of Granny Gallagher is of a dumpling of a woman with a grey head and a happy face, and an apron. She always had an apron, which was a sort of an overall and had a floral print, if I'm not mistaken. She probably had a few of them but to my unobservant eye at the time it seemed like the same one all the time. Granny Gallagher had a fire in the house once, and we all thought it was great crack, but that's a story, perhaps, for another day. Today, we are concerned about people.
Next to Granny Gallagher came Frank and Delia Nealis. They reared six children. Delia; was Granny Gallagher's daughter. They had their share of what people, in their soft-natured way, refer to as troubles. They raised fine children, but Frank (Jnr.), who was a journalist with "The Mayo News", and "The Irish Press" and later worked in public relations with the B.I. Line, died young. A daughter, Margaret, married Martin Codd and went to live in Rosslare, where she also died a young mother. Another daughter, Rita, died some weeks after birth... probably what would be described today as a cot death. Those were sad events but this is not really about death and sad times it is about those who survived and where they are today.
Mary Nealis is married in London to Michael McHugh from the half parish. Bebe is married in Tuam, Ann in Dublin, and Denis, in Belfast. They all married "foreign" . . . Irish, of course, but not from the parish.
We were next. Ours was what might be described as a rumbustious, to put it mildly, household. (I got that word rumbustious from my father, Bob, who had a penchant for coming out, now and again, with jawbreakers which, at the time, I thought he used invent himself... and he was not beyond doing that as he was liberal enough in his treatment of the Queen's English ... but which I have since discovered were not inventions but most apposite and descriptive words when placed in proper context). It was a household, both boisterous and unruly, but even though I say so myself, warm, friendly and inviting, and it attracted people. There are stories that could be told, and especially one about the green Connemara Rosary beads but, again, this is not about events. It is about people and where they are today.
Well Bob is gone. We buried him just over two years ago. Only Ma remains in the house. My two sisters emigrated long ago at a time when emigration was not an option as it very often is today. They had to go. They did reasonbly o.k. for themselves and now, by various circuitous routes they are both in North America, one in Texas and one in Canada. (Rhona will be home from the Lone Star State to read this next week, and it will drag copious tears from her soft heart). There was four sons as well and we are mostly around, though gone from the street.
Looking, from our perspective down the street, next came Julia Davitt and her daughter, Judy. Julia Davitt was old and she was a voracious reader. It was she who introduced me to the "Western" For bringing Zane Grey's "Riders of the Purple Sage" into my life I will be forever in her debt. I swapped all the books I could lay my hands on with Julia Davitt, who was not too fussy whether it was a Western, a mystery thriller or a detective story. She was always delighted to get a book. She has, of course, passed on. Judy married Paddy Gibbons, and they along with son. Pat, continue to be part of Medlicott St. ... the only household to survive and show an increase.
All Gone ...
NEXT came the Misses Moloney's. These were two very old ladies, sisters, one of whom was a dressmaker. Maggie and Bridgie, as I recall were their names. Another old, though not as old, lady came to the house, Miss Lavelle, who was a nurse and she looked after them towards the end. They are now all gone and their house a weekend home for the Maguires.
Pa Malone's house came next, but I can't recall Pa living there during the time of which I speak. I feel he was in Melcomb and Jim Molloy and Baby Molloy were in residence. Jim worked in Kilroy's Ironworks.
They followed their daughter, who married up in the Midlands and their house became vacant. It has been renovated and now Michael Walsh lives there.
Patrick and Bridgie Kelly would be the first people I came across who could be described as victims of rural de-population. They "came in from the country" and brought Jim, Margie, Rita., Ann and Breda to the street. There are none of them left now and the house they lived in is derelict. Fred and Aggie McDonnell, as best I can recall, were in the next house. They had three daughters and also came in from the country (now that I think about it rural de-population is not a new invention), but were not all that long on Medlicott Street. They moved to The Quay. The house they lived in was to have a bit of a history as the Powells came and set up an industry there. The Powells generated great excitement when they decided to paint the entire street. With real paint, not whitewash. That house is now occupied by Miss Quinn.
Then came Joe Macks. Joe married Breege and they had a family of three daughters and one son. They also reared Eileen, who was a niece of Breege. It was another full and lively household. But while all seven are still with us, hale and hearty none live on the street. Beside Joe Mack's was Hoban's. It was the only empty house on the street at the time. The Hoban's had emigrated, but Harry, in particular, was a regular visitor. Guard and Mrs. Caffrey and their family, Mary, Raymond, Liam and Francis were in the next house, in which I had to say many a Rosary. Francis was the makings of a good handballer, a sport at which quite a few of us on the street were fairly competent. Guard Caffrey was transferred and the family are now in England. It was a house which came to be rented on a fairly regular basis and quite a few families, including my own, got a start there. It is now the home of Michael and Mary Jane O'Malley and their four children.
Old Doc came next. He was not a doctor, but an ex-R.I.C. man named Doherty, a big, gaunt, friendly man, who was looked after by his niece, Florrie. Eamonn and Mary Connolly lived in the house and brought his family to it for a time, but they moved to Westport. Now Ms. Nonie McManamon lives alone there.
Tom and Mrs. Saunders were in the next house. They had a son, Joe, and daughter, Miriam. Joe spent years in England and Miriam went on to become the first-ever, and only, Ban-Garda from the street. Joe came back from England and is the only one now left. Then came Gerry and Baby Bracken and their daughters, Geraldine and Dolores. They have moved out and now the house is lived in by Francie McManamon.
Joe McLoughlin and Hannah, with four children, I think, at the time, moved into the house next to Brackens. When they moved out Martin and Breege Maguire spent some time there, but now the house is empty, used as a Summer home by Martin and Mrs. Sheridan and members of their family. They come from England from time to time to get a quiet break in the house. Miss Hastings came next. She was a gently lady, prim and proper, who now is being cared for at the MacBride Home in Westport. The house is now owned by Paddy Kilroy, but he, too, is hospitalised at the moment. Then came Paddy and Mary McCormack and their four children. Paddy was our postman. He is now delivering his mails in that great post office in the sky. His son, Padraig, remains in the town but has moved from the street, and now Mary is on her own.
George and Marzie Reid were next. They had a full house. Joe, Eithne, Michael, John, Maeve, Noel, Seamus and Mary lived and played and fought and had "craic" on the street. Now all arc scattered, leaving only Joe. Next was Joyce's Garage, which still remains in business, and then there was Pat Joyce and Bea, his sister, and Mary Healy, and her son. Silvie, and daughter, Mary. They lived in a nice period building adjoining the garage. Silvie continues to run the garage but no longer lives on the street. The rest are gone and the house is falling into disrepair.
Potted History
THAT then gives a potted history of the street and its people. At any time during the period of which I write there were between eighty and ninety one people residing on the street. There was industry and employment, there were people providing services.
Today, there is a total of twenty people and that includes two newly-weds, Seamus and Ann Marie, who will soon be moving on, living on Medlicott Street. All but three are pensioners, retired or unemployed, while the O'Malley children attend school. It remains a nice street, peopled by nice people, but it is a street that is on its last legs.
You won't get any, of that detail from the Census and that is why I've gone to the trouble to re-create Medlicott Street in the 'fifties. In any street in any town in Mayo, if you force yourself to think, you will find the pattern repeated. And still the planners in Dublin, for whom the Census is the Bible, still cannot see that the lifesblood is being drained out of the country.
