Cnochan na gCeann

(Hill of the Heads)

Cnochan na gCeann can be seen from P. J. Kilroys house in Lecarrow. Tradition has it that there was a battle fought here some centuries ago. There were two clans fighting at the cnochan. One of the chieftains was injured during the battle so his clan retreated to the hill and the end of the Valley. Here they were surrounded and the chieftain, named Leachtain died and was later buried here. His grave is marked by a few stones and a whitethom bush. A bronze battle axe was found by Mick Keane, Gortawalla in a nearby stream in the last century, while reclaiming land.

Famine Graves

The inhabitants of Cuilmore suffered during the Famine period 1845-1849 like everywhere else in the west of Ireland. Despite the proximity of the shore and its abundance of fish, death did occur, and one of the many unmarked graveyards can still be seen on the hill opposite Owen Keanes (deceased) house in Cuilmore.
