Board of Management of the National Schools

By Breege Chambers

BOARDS of Managements for National Schools were initially established in the mid 70s with the responsibility of raising the local contribution towards the capital expenses of the school, appointing teachers, providing insurance against liability for injury to pupils and teachers and school maintenance.

The Patron of the. Diocese elects a Manager who is charged with the direct government of the school. The Bishop also nominates two trustees who act as members of the board and a further two representatives are elected by the parents to this office. The final member of the Board of Management is the Principal Teacher of the school.

Since its institution in the 70's the Board of Management has made a significant contribution to the development of the school. They have been responsible for providing funds to modernise and furnish the building and also to purchase advanced educational resources.

In the past, suggestions were made at Board level regarding the provision of swimming classes, dancing lessons and horseriding and all of these have been successfully carried out. Overall the Board of Management provides an opportunity for parents to playa role in the education of their children. A new Board of Management is elected every three years.
