Swimming

By Carol Geraghty

SWIMMING is a very healthy sport. When you swim you move all the muscles in your body. You can learn how to swim at any age. Some people find swimming very easy when they are young and others don't. Swimming is very good exercise for the whole body. Very fit people swim nearly every morning for an hour.

For many years now, the pupils and teachers of Cuilmore N .S. have gone to the Swimming Pool in Castlebar. We go seven weeks each year after Christmas. Our bus driver who brings us to the swimming pool is very friendly and we hope to have him again next year. He has been our bus driver for many years. His name is Eugene Deffiey.

We go for half an hour long sessions each week. The pupils are divided into two classes, beginners and more advanced. The pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class are able to swim now as a result of all the years of practice. The classes last for fifteen minutes with a qualified instructor. Then we spend another fifteen minutes practising what we have learned or simply to enjoy ourselves. The more advanced group of pupils have more of a chance to experience how relaxing the swim- ming pool really is, while at the same time the beginners get a chance to get used to the water.

I can still remember my first time in the swimming pool. I was pretty scared at first but after a while I got used to it. The teacher brought me out in the middle of the water to take away my fear. It wasn't long before I got used to the water. I have been going to the swimming pool now for many years and now I can swim.

I have enjoyed all the swimming lessons and so have the other pupils and teachers over the years. I hope they will continue for many more years.
