New Geraldines Team

The new CuilmorelFahy-based Geraldines G .A.A. football team was formed in February of 1954 and entered in the]unior B section of the West Mayo Championship of that year.

In preparation for the championship, Geraldines played a Shramore/Derrada selection in a challenge and lost by 1-5 to 1-3. By all accounts, there were no frills attached to the game, which was refereed by Sean Meenaghan.

The Geraldines had better success in the first round of the championship, when on April 1 they defeated Drummin by 1-4 to 1-3 in a pitch near Fahy.

Geraldines lined out as follows: S. Cussan,]. Walsh, N. Chambers, M. Kelly, T. Conroy, Conway, S. Goggins, P. Kilker, J. Chambers, C. Moore, P. McHugh, L. Walsh, T. Conway, P. Murray, J.Dever.

.In the second round Geraldines were beaten by Kilmeena, on April 21st

The team that day was: T. Nixon, J. Walsh, M. Quinn, S. Nixon, N. Chambers, T. Conway, J. Chambers, P. Kilker, P. McHugh,J. Chambers,J. Dever,J. Bryce, M. Kilroy, J. C. Moore.

In subsequent games, Geraldines had limited successes.

The Geraldines convention in 1956 gave the club a new name "Newport G.A.A. Club" to accommodate Newport players again. The named changed in 1958 to "Burrishoole G.A.A. Club" which covered Fahy, Newport, Tiemaur and Mulranny. During the past 34 years Burrishoole G.A.A. Club has acquired their own football pitch "McGovern Memorial Park" and erected dressing and club rooms which is rated today as one of Mayo's premier playing grounds.

Burrishoole has had many successes and triumphs in all grades of football and produced many illustrious county players during that period.

Newport's First County Camogie Title

A Cuilmore girl, Kathleen Monaghan, featured prominently on the Newport Camogie team who won their first ever County Camogie title on Sunday, November 10th, 1962, when they beat Doohoma in the final at Crossmolina.
