Mary Mulchrone competed in the Dublin City Marathon in 1988. She raised money for Western Care. She completed it in 2 hours and 24 seconds. She received a plaque and enjoyed running it.
Mary Mulchrone has played on the Mayo Senior Football Team for the past six years. She was only sixteen when she started playing for Newport. From there she went on to play for Mayo. The first year they were playing they beat Roscommon in the Con- naught final and went on to play Cavan. They lost to Cavan by 2 points. They won the Connaught final in 1989 again and lost the All-Ireland semi final. Mary plays centre half forward for the ladies team, and she has never missed a match. They have hard training sessions to prepare themselves. Mary played for Westport and at the same time she played on the Mayo Senior Team in 1988,1989, 1990 and 1991. She still has not given up her football talents. She is now living in London and plays for a London team. She is very athletic and enjoys it.
This is the first year that the Sacred Heart School had a football team. Cuilrnore is well represented with Teresa Mulchrone, goalkeeper, Margaret Mulchrone, right back, Mairead Geraghty (Captain), centre back, Kathleen Mulchrone, left back and Julie Langan, sub. Westport played their first match and then we realised that we had a good strong team. We went on to the Connaught final against a good experienced team in Galway. But this did not put down our hopes because with the strong Mulchrone and Geraghty defence, the Convent of Mercy, Galway could not pass. We won the Connaught Cup by a win of 3 goals to 1 goal.
In another league Westport could not be stopped. Another good performance from the Cuilmore backs, failed to let teams like Ballinrobe, Convent of Mercy Galway, Fr. Griffin Road and Carna win any match. ~-was another semi final day against Carramore and then to the final. We played in Terryland Park the best team we had seen in both leagues. It was a hard match to win but still even Cornamona could not beat our strong backs. The final score was 3 goals to 1 goal. The past five matches were played within eight days so day after day we had a match. Three days later it was one of the most important matches -the All Ireland semi final. We were to play last year's All Ireland winners, Letterkenny. Kathleen Mulchrone was injured from the previous game so we had no strong left back to take her place. We went onto the pitch with a very good attitude.
After three minutes into the game one of our forwards scored a goal. But shortly after Letterkenny equalized and just three minutes to go Letterkenny scored for Letterkenny. The final score was Letterkenny 2 goals and Westport 1 goal but Westport deserved to win after all the matches they just won before that. Westport only lost one match out of eleven matches altogether. What could Westport do without our Cuilmore football experts -nothing.
We began to play in Cuilmore National School then went on to play for Westport, who knows we may yet play for Ireland. Cuilmore members of Westport square are the Mulchrone clan -Teresa, Margaret and Kathleen, our captain in the first league Mairead Geraghty and our sub, Julie Langan.
Among our best athletes in the area are cousins Noreen McManamon and Martin Joseph Crehan. They have both taken part in numerous cross- country and half-marathon's evens over the years. They both hold many trophies and medals for their achievements. Noreen came first in the All Ireland Cross Country Intermediate Women's in 1990. She also was a member of the team which won the Connaught Telegraph sports star of the month in February 1990.
