OVER the last quarter of a century, great changes have been taking place in the nursing field. Many diseases and illnesses that were once incurable have now yielded due to the advances of surgery and medicine.
The first heart transplant was carried out in Cape Town, South Africa, on December 3,1967 by a team of specialists under the guidance of Christian Barnard. At the present, transplants of other organs such as the kidneys and the liver are probably even more successful. The introduction of donor cards has helped many people in these circumstances and I think that there should be the utmost emphasis on this fact.
Many nursing procedures have been superseded and are now part of history, in their place, new techniques, new drugs and new operations have survived to replace the old. Many patients to whom we were once only able to give words of comfort can now make a complete recovery. People who were once incarcerated in mental institutions can now live quite happily and enjoy life in the bosom of the community with some help and guidance from the Community Care Nurse. This is also true for the mentally handicapped who can now make an important contribution to a society who for far too long chose to ignore their requirements.
Most people when they think of nursing, picture themselves in a hospital situation and of course it is here that the basic training begins. Some problems that are to be found in the different branches of nursing can prove quite a challenge for the nurse but this is usually surpassed by the satisfaction one gets on seeing a person who has been very ill go home fully recovered.
Many people who attended Cuilmore National School went into the nursing profession. Unfortunately, some had to emigrate to train. Sometimes more than one member of a family pursued the same profession as in the case of the Caseys of Lecarrow and the Feeneys of Derrinumera. The Caseys were Josephine, Mai and Teresa.
